Welcome to this section of the Rara Avis website. In the following pages we would like to give you a taste of what we have been finding in the reserve over the last couple of years. Through the efforts of many individuals and organizations we have compiled checklists of several groups of plants and animals that are found within the boundaries of Rara Avis.

One of the big attractions in Rara Avis is the incredible diversity of bird species, over the last few years we been able to produce an impressive checklist for the birds of Rara Avis - with no less than 367 species recorded !  

Other groups of animals that have received a lot of attention in Rara Avis over the last few years are mammals and amphibians and reptiles. Illustrated lists of the species in these groups found in Rara Avis are also published in this section and will be expanded continuously.

For those who are interested in the flora of this region, we will soon add a list of plant species recorded in Rara Avis by  famous botanist Barry Hammel of INBIO. At this time we can already give you a preliminary checklist of the orchids known from the reserve.

Future visitors of Rara Avis, or anyone who has an interest in tropical rainforest ecology, can download annotated versions of both our birdlist and our herpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles) checklist. Simply follow the instructions on your screen.

We would like to keep expanding this biodiversity section by adding more species to our lists and by including more checklists to our website. We also encourage researchers to consider Rara Avis for their field studies - El Plastico Lodge is an ideal setting for a field station.
