Costa Rica RainforestIf you are looking for tennis courts and swimming pools, hair dryers and televisions, Rara Avis is the wrong place. If what you seek is being in pure nature, deep in the rainforest, with clean and comfortable lodging, with home-style Costa Rican meals, no electricity plus an adventurous learning experience different from ordinary tourism, then Rara Avis will suit you. At the same time, you will be encouraging the wise use of the rainforest - the reason for the existence of Rara Avis

Rara Avis was developed in 1983 to show that we can make rainforest economically productive and so save it from destruction. In Rara Avis, you will be in a remote pristine jungle - true wilderness - bordering Braulio Carrillo National Park and the Zona Protectora La Selva at 10º16’53” N lat., 84º02’43” W lon. (look for us on GoogleEarth). At 700 meters (2300 ft) above sea level, the climate stays moderate and comfortable year-round and ranging from 90°F (32°C) on a hot day or to 65°F (18°C). There is a lot of rain (it's a rainforest!), but mosquitoes are not a problem. There is little seasonal variation in temperature or rainfall, which is frequent, especially in the afternoons, but usually short-lived.

Costa Rica AdventureBecause of the difficult access, we strongly recommend a minimum stay of two nights. The tractor leaves our office at Las Horquetas at 9 AM, arriving at our Waterfall Lodge about 3 hours later and leaves the Waterfall Lodge at 2 PM, arriving at Horquetas around 3 hours later. Transportation is usually in Unimog truck with benches half of the ride and then our tractor will drive you by a rough road through the forest.

Transfer by horse (2 pax minimum) can be arranged anytime during daylight with at least 24 hours notice and extra cost per person.

Our rate includes  twice a day   natural history guided  walks on our trails, this an  activity  for all those visitors who like to share (not private guide), swimming at the waterfalls in good weather, relaxing on balconies, or good conversation with other guests from around the world.

Bilingual private naturalist  guide  and   birdwatcher guides are available upon request,  for an extra charge $90 per day
